Facts and figures of modern life *

For the next few days I am going to post some random, but rather interesting, facts and figures.

Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (widely known as ASBOs).

Numbers of ASBOs issued in Britain since 1999: 7,096

Some of the weirdest reasons to receive an ASBO:
Margaret Porter, 50, from North Yorkshire, was given a six-year ASBO in 2005 for attacking her brother with a stick of rhubarb. (see image of rhubarb)

Kim Sutton, from Bath, who has tried to commit suicide four times, received an ASBO banning her from jumping into rivers, or canals or onto railway lines.

Some more facts:

At least 160 ASBOs have been issued to children aged 10 to 12.

Chernobyl: 20 years on

26 of April 1986 : The worst nuclear disaster ever...

Have a trip around the ghost city of Pripyat...

Wildlife defies radiation
...As humans were evacuated from the region 20 years ago, wildlife moved in. Existing populations multiplied and species not seen for decades, such as the lynx and eagle owl, began to return.
Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident site- a nature reserve. What an oxymoron!

Federico Garcia Lorca

A couple of poems ...

Capriccio
Behind each mirror
is a dead star
and a baby rainbow
sleeping.

Behind each mirror
is a black forever
and a nest of silences
too young to fly.

The mirror is the wellspring
become mummy, closes
like a shell of light
at sunset.

The mirror
is the mother dew,
the book of desiccated
twilights, echo becomes flesh.

Adam & Eve
The serpent cracked
the mirror
in a thousand pieces
& the apple
was his rock

A star
There is a tranquil star,
a star that has no eyelids.
-Where?
-A star . . .
In sleepy water.
In the pond.

Good Friday *

This year I didn't celebrate Easter during the Catholic Easter, and unfortunately I don't think that I will celebrate the Orthodox Easter either. I am working today and tomorrow.I hope I will be able to eventually, roast some lamb and potatoes, and open a bottle of wine, for Easter Sunday...

Anyway, I have a train to catch...

another random photo... ( taken: December 2003 in Psakoudia, Chalkidiki)

I am going to bed...

Today I spent my day in the lab cutting wings off the flies and dissecting their abdomens... It was a really fun day in lab! I got back home around 9pm, cooked noodles with mushrooms and chillies, drunk a glass of white wine and watched the news.
I thing its time for me to go to bed, read a chapter of my book and get some rest .

The following photo has been picked randomly to be posted here tonight...

I am tired...

I hardly had any sleep last night...
I spent the day partly at the supermarket, partly house-keeping... and now I must wash up the dirty dishes and clean the kitchen.
At least I will catch a glimpse of CSI: Las Vegas , then a shower and an interesting book .

And, of course, while listening to favourite songs...

nite nite

Cocaine ...

I am reading a book by Dominic Streatfeild, COCAINE.

It is quite an interesting book... It tells the story of the coca plant, the indians of south America, the Spanish conquerors, Freud and Cocaine addiction...

I really enjoyed reading about the experiments done in order to demonstrate the binge pattern of cocaine taking!

"... A famous experiment in the late 60s gave two sets of laboratory rats unlimited access to cocaine for one group, and heroin for the other, and left them to take as much as they wanted. It didn't take either group long to discover the drugs. The difference was that heroin, a sedative, made the rats sleepy and thus put a brake on its own consumption. Cocaine, a stimulant, did exactly the opposite. Within a couple of days, the heroin rats had settled into a routine: taking heroin, sleeping, wandering around, eating, taking more heroin and going back to sleep. The cocaine rats, meanwhile, took cocaine. And that was all they did. Cocaine didn't make them feel like sleeping or eating. It made them feel like taking more cocaine. When they finally collapsed of exhaustion their intake of the drug stopped temporarily, but the moment they woke up they started taking it again. The experiment lasted a month, at the end of which all of the heroin rats had developed serious drug habits but were, otherwise, relatively healthy: they were eating, grooming, and drinking normally. All of the cocaine rats were dead. "

pretty scary !

Do Not Use Drugs!
Use chocolate instead!

Oh, by the way, last night I watched Chocolat on BBC2... great movie, although by the end of it I had cravings for chocolate. Instead, I made a smoothie with Kiwis, Apples and orange juice! Simply Delicious!

The US consider nuclear weapons against Iran...

According to Mr Hersh, the author of the original article on military action against Iran, the Pentagon is considering striking the Iranians with nuclear weapons (!!!).

"...One of the military’s initial option plans, as presented to the White House by the Pentagon this winter, calls for the use of a bunker-buster tactical nuclear weapon, such as the B61-11, against underground nuclear sites."

Where the bloody hell is the IAEA now???
Wake up you guys, do something... Don't let it happen again, and this time would be even worse than Afganistan and Iraq...

But still, the white house says : We still believe in deplomacy ... Yeah, whatever!

This sucks... Big time!

Sunday News...

Today is Sunday, I woke up late...had a slice of multigrain brown bread with butter and honey (greek one, delicious) and I am having my cup of coffee (filter, Costa Rican one, great aroma).
I am reading through todays news, and thought that I can share them with you (not my breakfast though, only the news !)

First of all, Bush's administration is planning a US preemptive air-strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.
Oh crap, they are starting again!

Italians are voting for a new government. On monday, Mr Berlusconi would be starting a new term in office, OR a new term in jail...
I dont like him ... He looks very sleazy ! But I shall ask my Italian friends and come back to this subject later on.

Charles and Camilla are celebrating their first anniversary. They are going to celebrate by releasing a photo, taken by the famous photographer Mario Testino...
Congrats mate!

more news to follow ...
next time I 'll try my best to post some picture too!

Why???

About a month ago, in northern Italy, an 18-month old baby boy was snatched from its family home in the middle of the night. What makes this abduction cruel is that the little boy suffered from epilepsia, and that its family wasn't a rich one...

Two men, together with a woman, have been arrested after one of the men confessed the kidnapping.
The kidnappers were two builders that have worked in the boy's house.
Italians are mourning the death of the boy and asking for the death penalty to be reinstated for the kidnappers.

The two men confessed that they killed the boy during the first night, because they couldn't stand his cries!
According to the italian state radio, the kidnappers used a spade to kill the little boy.

HOW CAN A HUMAN BEING DO SOMETHING SO HORRIFIC AND UNJUST ? AND FOR WHAT APPARENT REASON? MONEY ???
